SUMMARY:Kay's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The selection for February is the 2001 Pulitzer Prize Winner The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. \nThe Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2000 novel about two Jewish cousins\, Joe Kavalier and Sammy Clay\, who create comic books in New York City during the Golden Age of comics\, set against the backdrop of World War II and the Holocaust. \nThe story follows their creative partnership as they develop characters like The Escapist\, blending their personal lives\, dreams\, and fears with their superhero creations\, spanning from Brooklyn to Prague and the Arctic. \n“The depth of Chabon’s thought\, his sharp language\, his inventiveness and his ambition make this a novel of towering achievement.” (NYT) \n  \nZOOM: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83650424999?pwd=OicbHe3ScQB1xG92OgloOF0ijlB3at.1 \nMeeting ID: 836 5042 4999 \nPasscode: 736268 \n

SUMMARY:Kay's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The selection for April is The Magic Barrel\, short stories by Bernard Malamud. \n  \nBernard Malamud’s first book of short stories\, The Magic Barrel\, has been recognized as a classic from the time it was published in 1959\, when it won the National Book Award.  The 13 stories have a wide range\, but what is most memorable about them is their depth. They are funny and tragic and true to humanity. They are set in New York and Italy. It is a book about the immigrant experience and tells the stories of shoemakers\, matchmakers\, and rabbis\, in a voice that blends Yiddish folklore with artistic magic. And the magic endures. \nZoom Link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86785019580?pwd=VgrAutDbaLyJ6w8tY1z39WaQSEa6l9.1 \nMeeting ID: 867 8501 9580 \nPasscode: 983421 \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kay's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The book for this session is Heart of a Stranger by Angela Buchdahl. \nPart memoir\, part sermon collection\, Heart of a Stranger tells the story of Rabbi/ Cantor Angela Buchdahl. The daughter of a Korean Buddhist mother and an American Jewish father\, Buchdahl traces the many twists and turns she took to find her way to becoming the Senior Rabbi of Central Synagogue\, one of the most prominent and innovative Jewish communities in the United States. \nHeart of a Stranger is a moving portrayal of a storied rabbinic journey. The title is indeed apt. It speaks not only to how Buchdahl carries her dual identities\, making her more sensitive to those who might feel like outsiders\, but also to how the book lets us into her heart. Heart of a Stranger shows us the values\, struggles\, yearnings\, and Torah that guide one of Judaism’s most powerful teachers. \nRabbi Buchdahl discusses her bestselling memoir “Heart of A Stranger” and her journey to becoming the first woman to be the senior rabbi of Central Synagogue. With Abigail Pogrebin.  In the Spotlight: Angela Buchdahl \nJoin via Zoom: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86033882529?pwd=LnLrgnv9kYs1kiefTV1bwgyvaGP27E.1: \nMeeting ID: 860 3388 2529 \nPasscode: 518484 \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kay's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Sons and Daughters\, Chaim Grade’s serialized novel about Jewish life in 1930s Europe\, published in English for the first time last year. A sprawling and incident-packed novel\, set during the 1930s in Poland and Lithuania\, that is largely about rabbis and their wayward\, modernity-seeking children.\n\nThe Lithuania-born Chaim Grade\, who died in 1982\, was one of the heavies of Yiddish literature in the 20th century though never as well-known as Isaac Bashevis Singer or Sholem Aleichem.\n\n  \nPanel discussion about the book at 92Y includes translator Rose Waldman.\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN9I23ixigk
